CBA 13-2 as playoffs begin

Coach Joe LaRocca’s team has relied on solid pitching from lefties Jerry DiMaso and Sean Piha and right-hander Mark Lamb, combined with an excellent defense to keep opponents at bay. “This team is very strong up the middle,” LaRocca said. “And it’s not just making the routine plays. Our guys get to a lot of balls and turn them into outs.” Strong-armed catcher Vinnie Cavaliere anchors the defense. Aaron Congo and Paul Passariello split duty at second base, while Tom Celiano and Eddie Daniele share the job at shortstop. Center fielder Mark Sanserve is an outstanding fly chaser. The team’s top hitters include Sanserve, Lamb, first baseman/pitcher Kyle Slate, third baseman Mike Galeotafiore, and outfielder Scott Micalles. CBA’s lineup also includes plenty of depth. Gil Hernandez, David Ferrugio and John Conell all play the outfield; Chris Griffin plays first base and backs up Cavaliere behind the plate; and Alex Grant gives LaRocca another arm on the hill. “Our pitching has really kept us in games and given us an opportunity to win,” LaRocca said. “The guys just seem to find ways to win. Whether it’s getting the timely hit or making the good defensive play, they get it done.”last_img
